What about the fact that your body goes into ketosis, which can kill?
In the 70's, Dr. Atkin's Revolutionary Diet (low carb, high protein and
fat) was so popular and I tried it with great success. Then I gained all
of the weight back as soon as I tried eating healthily again. I remember
I had to buy a box of "ketostix" and test my urine every day, because the
goal was to actually have your urine showing ketones.
Years later, after being diagnosed with diabetes, type II, I was amazed
when my diabetic educator was teaching me about how to handle sick days
and avoid having ketones showing in my urine. I again had to buy
ketostix to be sure that I *wasn't* going into ketosis. I mentioned Dr.
Atkin's diet and she said, "That's why some people died while on that
diet." I was stunned and very thankful that I had not been able to
completely achieve the goal of the high levels of ketones that Dr.
Atlkins wanted us to be showing.
